Rawley kidney update

If you remember, Rawley was born with hydronephrosis, same as Madi. We first saw it when visiting the maternal fetal medicine folks. Well today was a follow up. It's not a fun appointment because it takes forever, over 2 hours. The first follow up was just shy of a meltdown because it coincided with nap time and feeding. I wasn't looking forward to today because once again, it'd be over nap time. We've been giving Rawley breathing treatments to combat a little wheeze he picked up, "reactive airway disease" is what the doc called it. Most kids that get tagged with RAD end up with an asthma diagnosis...yippee! Anyway, Rawley's either hyped up after a treatment or sleepy. Today he was wired! He had one right before I got him from daycare and the little man was like Taz. It made for an entertaining ultrasound. Poor tech almost got a second person in to help hold him still so she could get good shots of his kidneys. "Man he's active!" "Is he always this busy?" I have to give her credit because she rolled with it and tried to continue whether Rawley was on his stomach or back. I laughed because at one point she seemed rather frustrated and I apologized; asked how I could hold him better. She smiled and said "forgot which way was up with all his moving." Comedy. This was him on the way in to IU North:

In the waiting room they had a kids area with the most awesome furniture. Some day I hope to be able to have some like it in a playroom. Cushy, modern, bright colored...it was great. Rawley's favorite was a little table set from IKEA that's metal with little flowers punched out around the edges. Nana, it's the same one you wanted to get for Madi. It was the little holes and metal that drew Rawley's attention. He stood up next to it and slapped it over and over and over, giggling at the sound each time. Also tried to pick up the dark spots (holes) but just succeeded in getting his little fingers in there from time to time. Thankfully it made the 20 minute wait pass quickly. After the ultrasound we treked over to the medical office building (attached to hospital) to meet with Dr. Cain. We had another wait over there but these doctor offices are smart, they line the tables with this crinkly paper that babies just loooove. I'm sure it's there to keep the kiddos occupied just as much as it's there to help keep germs at bay. Madi always loved to play with that paper and Rawley was no different. Except maybe for the amount of spit up he contributed.

But on to the results! Doc says "good news and bad news." Bad news is there's no change. Good news is there's no change. On a scale of 1-4 Rawley is between a 2 and 3. With my history he's more apt to develop problems. Sorry bud. We were sent on our way with instructions to keep an eye on any fevers not easily explained as it could be a kidney infection. I asked about the tell tale odor of an infection and he said by the time the urine changes it's kind of too late. Fevers, not urine, got it! We go back in June for another follow up. Doc said that if he's going to outgrow it that'll happen by age 3. Hmm, wonder if that was his way of saying Rawley will keep this -ologist for a while...

Since we were at the doctor they did a weight and height check. Rawley is 18lbs 9oz and 27.5in long. Go Rawley man!!
